An Inspiring Story

Millions of people watch the Super Bowl every year and estimates of this year’s game were that the viewing audience may have been the largest ever.  There were many key plays in the game but none more important than the long pass to David Tyree on the final drive for the Giants.  It was the one that he caught falling back on top of his helmet.  I didn’t know much about Tyree then and don’t know much more now, but this little story makes me appreciate him and the direction of his life.

A Lesson of Hope from the Super Bowl
— Michael Medved

David Tyree of the New York Giants became an NFL hero with an amazing catch that clinched his team's upset victory in the Super Bowl.

But Tyree doesn't see Super Bowl Sunday as the greatest day of his life--he gives that distinction to the time of a drug arrest in 2004. Busted with a half-pound of marijuana and locked in a rough stone cell, Tyree says he hit bottom after more than a decade of drug and alcohol abuse. Making a decisive commitment to Christian faith, he married the mother of his two illegitimate boys and they're now regular churchgoers who are expecting twin girls.

They also created a charitable foundation to help youngsters make better choices than Tyree as an adolescent. David Tyree's inspiring story also offers important perspective on drug laws. Legalization of drugs wouldn't be a way to help people like him, but rather would be a way to give up on them.
