Excuses! Excuses! “The Lord said, ‘I have seen the troubles my people have suffered in Egypt, and I have heard their cries when the Egyptian slave masters hurt them. I am concerned about their pain, and I have come down to save them from the Egyptians. I will bring them out of that land and lead them to a good land with lots of room -- a fertile land. It is the land of the Canaanites, Hittites, Amorites, Perizzites, Hivites, and Jebusites. I have heard the cries of the people of Israel, and I have seen the way the Egyptians have made life hard for them. So now I am sending you to the king of Egypt. Go! Bring my people, the Israelites, out of Egypt!’" (Exodus 3:7-10)
After God appeared to Moses in the burning bush he explained that he wanted Moses to go back to Egypt and lead the Israelites to the promised land. But God hardly finished explaining his purpose before Moses started making excuses about why he couldn’t do what God had called him to accomplish. Notice his excuses: 1) I am not a great man, v. 11 2) I don’t even know your name, v. 13 3) What if the people do not believe you really appeared to me, 4:1 4) I cannot speak well. I speak slowly and can’t find the right words, 4:10 5) Just send someone else, 4:13 God’s answer: “I will be with you. This will be the proof that I am sending you: After you lead the people out of Egypt, all of you will worship me on this mountain” (Ex. 3:12). Notice in the text above how many times God says “I” am going to do something. The lesson for us: God has called us and when he calls he empowers us to accomplish his purposes. The promise is still the same: “I will be with you.”
